Welcome
What to expect on your first night
Joining a new group can be a bit daunting, but we're here to make it easy. Here's a quick quide on how to get started with us:
We play to have fun, together.
To get the most out of our gaming time together, we follow a few simple "table manners" to keep things running smoothly.
1. Getting Starting
• For RPGs: Games and players are coordinated in advance. If you're wanting to join a game, check our Meetup group or speak to a host.
• For board games: We prefer to finalise tables and players soon after the official start time (19:30). While very occasionally some games may be pre-arranged, we try to ensure anyone arriving on time has a variety of game options. If you arrive after the start time your options may be more limited.
2. Listen First
• Learning a new game is the most focused part of the night. Please hold questions until the person teaching finishes a section or the entire explanation, unless they’ve specifically said they’re OK to be interrupted along the way.
3. Hands-Off
• Everyone’s "player space" is their own. We don’t touch another player’s stuff (dice, cards, tokens, etc) without permission.
4. Keep it Moving
• Rule disputes are part of the hobby. When they happen, the person teaching the game decides whether to pause the game to quickly check the rules / online or make a "table call" to keep play moving. Official rulings can be checked after the session and applied next time.
5. Safety & Comfort
We use safety tools, like the X-Card and Open Door Policy.
• The X-Card: Every table will have an X-card, either physically or virtually (if there’s no space on the table). This card is a "pause button" for any content or behaviour that makes the game stop being fun. Just tap it, or say “X-card”, and everything stops. Explaining why is optional. Play continues without that thing.
• Open Door: Life happens. It’s fine if you need to step away, take a break or leave early. If you can, just give the table a heads-up so they can adjust the game.
We play a wide variety of roleplaying games (RPGs) from different genres and themes. Most of our RPGs run in "blocks" of 4 or 8 weeks and are planned in advance. We sometimes have one-off sessions that just last the one night. If you've got a game that you're interesting in running please contact us (via the "Contact" page) and we'll be happy to chat about it.
We also have a wide range of board games. We have people happy to teach, so it's fine if you're new to the gaming hobby. Our board games aren't usually planned, so are always available for newcomers to jump right into.
Check our Meetup page before you come. We list the games currently running there, and you can "RSPV" to secure a spot at a specific table/game (subject to availability).
Doors open around 7:15 and games start around 7:30. If it's your first time, aim to arrive a few minutes early so we can do an introduction to the venue, our set up and welcome you to the group.
Not at all. While some members bring their own dice, rulebooks or games, we have plenty to share. You're welcome to bring snacks (sharing is optional). There are hot drink making facilities but you'll need to bring your own tea, coffee, etc.
It costs £5.00 a week, which covers room rent and other expenses. We accept card and contactless payments.
Occasionally some of the games we played can include adult themes, because of this we have a minimum age limit of 16 years old.
We have two mandatory safety tools.
We have an Open Door policy. An Open Door means anyone can leave any game (even the venue), at any time, for any reason. It means there'll be no social pressure to stay in a game they don’t want to stay in, even if that means the game won’t run. Because the game is never more important than personal well-being. The person doesn't have to give a reason, but it'd be helpful if they told someone at the table if they'd be returning to the game.
All our games use the X-Card tool.(https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SB0jsx34bWHZWbnNIVVuMjhDkrdFGo1_hSC2BWPlI3A/edit) This allows anyone in the game to edit out any content or behaviour they are uncomfortable with as the game is played.
We also include content warnings in the listings of any RPGs where caution is advised. Additional safety tools may also be used by the game host, and indicated in advance, as appropriate.
The venue has wheelchair access and toilets. Two of the three rooms we use are on ground level. If you'd like more details please get in touch and we'll be happy to try and help with any specific questions or needs you may have.
